Lyft (LYFT) said Thursday it is set to introduce autonomous vehicles on its platform as early as this summer through partnerships with companies including May Mobility, Mobileye (MBLY), and Marubeni.
In the early stages AVs will help improve service, reduce wait times, and expand the overall rideshare market without impacting driver earnings significantly, the ride-hailing company said.
As AV technology improves, these vehicles will complete more rides, yet many trips will still require human drivers in a hybrid model where they continue to provide personal services and manually manage specific scenarios, it said.
LYFT shares were up 0.6% in recent trading.
