Salt miner Compass Minerals is overhauling its upper ranks for the second time in less than a year, naming GXO Logistics executive Peter Fjellman as chief financial officer to succeed Jeff Cathey.

Patrick Merrin, Lundin Mining executive, has also been appointed to the vacant role of chief operating officer.

Peter Fjellman's appointment is effective immediately, said Compass. Outgoing CFO Cathey, who joined Compass as chief accounting officer in December 2023 and ascended to the financial chief role in June, is stepping down for personal reasons, said the company.

Merrin fills a role that has been open since June. Shares of the Overland Park, Kan., miner, which produces specialty materials such as potash and salt, hit an all-time low at that time after former Chief Operating Officer Gordon Dunn quit following only four months on the job.

Merrin, who will oversee operations at Compass Minerals' U.S., Canada and U.K. locations, had served as executive vice president of technical services at Lundin.

Cathey will remain in a consulting role for three months to help with the transition, said Compass.
