South Korea's Kospi 0.4% Lower; Defense, Financial, Shipbuilding Stocks Retreat -- Market Talk

0040 GMT - South Korea's benchmark Kospi falls 0.4% to 2523.73 in early trade, as defense, financial and shipbuilding stocks retreat. Traders are parsing President-elect Donald Trump's pledge to slap steep tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China immediately after taking office. Foreign and institutional investors are net sellers. Guided-missile supplier LIG Nex1 is down 7.2%. Shinhan Financial Group falls 3.4%. Shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is 2.3% lower. USD/KRW is 0.3% higher at 1,406.70, compared with the prior session's Seoul onshore trading close. The South Korean 10-year government bond yield is down 5.6 bps at 2.920%. (kwanwoo.jun@wsj.com)
