It was confirmed on Tuesday that the artificial intelligence startup Anthropic has completed its latest funding round, achieving a valuation of $3.5 trillion, with the amount raised surpassing the original target of one hundred billion dollars.
According to three informed sources, the total amount raised in this round is between $100 billion and $150 billion. These individuals requested anonymity due to the involvement of confidential information. They indicated that if Microsoft and NVIDIA decide to participate in the investment, this figure could increase further. Last November, Microsoft and NVIDIA had separately announced plans to invest up to $5 billion and $10 billion, respectively, in this AI startup, but it remains unclear whether they will participate in this round or the specific investment amounts.
Previous media reports indicated that this funding round is led by Coatue Management and Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC. According to informed sources, other participating investors include Sequoia Capital, which is also an investor in Anthropic's competitor, OpenAI.
A prominent UK financial media outlet was the first to report the news of Anthropic's current funding round being oversubscribed.
Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI research executives, with its current CEO, Dario Amodei, being one of the co-founders. The company is renowned for developing the Claude series of large language models, and its AI programming tool, Claude Code, has seen a massive surge in popularity in recent months. Amodei revealed to CNBC earlier this month that Anthropic's revenue last year approached $10 billion.
