On July 30, US autonomous trucking company Aurora Innovation announced that its unmanned autonomous freight system Aurora Driver will transition from daytime-only operations to round-the-clock transportation capabilities. Unlike human drivers, the autonomous driving system requires no rest breaks or sleep, potentially improving long-haul freight efficiency by over 100% (human drivers can drive a maximum of 11 hours per day, while autonomous systems can theoretically operate 24 hours), significantly reducing freight delivery times.
The Aurora Driver system is equipped with Aurora's proprietary FirstLight long-range LiDAR system, which maintains a 450-meter detection range even in dark environments and can identify road conditions 11 seconds earlier than human drivers. This perception system, which is more efficient than the human eye and never experiences fatigue, reduces the likelihood of serious accidents.
Aurora Innovation's next step is to expand the rainy weather driving capabilities currently implemented in their development fleet to their commercial fleet, with the goal of achieving commercial operations with hundreds of unmanned autonomous trucks by the end of 2026.
