On September 16th, JD.com held a wine tasting event in partnership with Kweichow Moutai. During the event, Liu Qiangdong addressed the issue of cutthroat industry competition, expressing strong support for the government's stance against excessive internal competition.
Liu Qiangdong outlined two different approaches to competition. "There are two ways to compete," he explained. "One is to compete downward - racing to the bottom with low-end products and services. The other is to compete on fairer pricing and safer products."
Liu Qiangdong emphasized his hope that through innovation in delivery services and product development, the industry could achieve a more equitable distribution of benefits among service providers, consumers, and platforms. "The fundamental issue is that platforms are currently absorbing all the industry profits. This is wrong," he stated.
The remarks highlight ongoing concerns about platform economics and profit distribution in China's digital commerce ecosystem, as industry leaders call for more sustainable competitive practices focused on quality and innovation rather than price wars.
