Stock Track | Mattel Stock Plummets 9.35% on Q3 Earnings Miss and North American Sales Slump

Shares of Mattel (MAT) plunged 9.35% in pre-market trading on Wednesday after the toy maker reported disappointing third-quarter results, falling short of Wall Street expectations. The steep decline came as investors reacted to weaker-than-anticipated sales, particularly in the crucial North American market.

Mattel's third-quarter earnings and revenue missed analyst estimates, with the company citing industry-wide shifts in retailer ordering patterns as a key factor. North American sales took a significant hit, declining 12% compared to the same period last year. This drop in the company's largest market overshadowed a modest 3% growth in international sales.

CEO Ynon Kreiz attributed the challenges to changing dynamics in the retail landscape, stating, "Our U.S. business was challenged in the third quarter by industry-wide shifts in retailer ordering patterns." He explained that many retailers are moving away from direct imports to domestic shipping, allowing for more flexibility in their holiday-season purchasing decisions.

Despite the disappointing quarter, Mattel maintained its full-year 2025 guidance, expressing optimism for a strong fourth quarter. Kreiz noted, "Since the beginning of the fourth quarter, orders from retailers in the U.S. have accelerated significantly and our POS is growing." This outlook suggests the company believes the third-quarter setback may be temporary.

However, some analysts have taken a more cautious stance. Several firms, including D.A. Davidson and Jefferies, lowered their price targets for Mattel stock following the earnings release. The revisions reflect concerns about the company's ability to recover from the third-quarter slump and navigate ongoing challenges in the toy industry, including rising costs due to tariffs and changing consumer preferences.

The sharp decline in Mattel's stock price underscores the broader pressures facing the toy industry, which is grappling with the impact of economic uncertainties, shifting retail trends, and increased competition from digital entertainment. As the crucial holiday shopping season approaches, investors will be closely watching to see if Mattel can deliver on its promise of a strong fourth-quarter performance and regain market confidence.
