North Wales Police have disclosed a cryptocurrency fraud case where a victim lost approximately $2.8 million worth of Bitcoin after being tricked into revealing their wallet seed phrase on a phishing website during a call from someone impersonating a senior police officer.
The fraudsters falsely claimed that the victim's information had appeared on a suspect's mobile phone and used the pretext of "helping to protect assets" to obtain the seed phrase. The funds were transferred within minutes of the information being compromised.
Police emphasized that no legitimate institution would ever request users to provide their seed phrases, and issued a warning to the public to be vigilant against social engineering attacks.
