Shares of Edgewell Personal Care (NYSE: EPC) plunged 10.89% in pre-market trading on Wednesday after the company reported disappointing second-quarter results and significantly lowered its full-year guidance. The personal care products manufacturer, known for brands like Schick, Playtex, and Hawaiian Tropic, faced challenges from a softening consumer environment and the anticipated impact of import tariffs.
For the second quarter ended March 31, Edgewell reported adjusted earnings per share of $0.87, falling short of the analyst consensus estimate of $0.90. Revenue also disappointed, coming in at $580.7 million compared to the expected $590.8 million, representing a 3.12% decrease from the same period last year.
Adding to investor concerns, Edgewell drastically revised its full-year outlook downward. The company now expects adjusted earnings per share between $2.85 and $3.05, down from the previous guidance of $3.15 to $3.35. Organic sales growth projections were also cut to 0-1% from the earlier forecast of 1-3%. Management cited a challenging economic environment that may lower consumer sentiment and moderate revenue expectations in the second half of the year.
Edgewell also announced it is taking steps to streamline operations and improve efficiency, including changes in Mexico, which will result in pretax charges of about $33 million for the fiscal year. The company's outlook now includes the impact of all known U.S. and international tariffs, raising concerns about potential margin pressure. Executives stated they are considering some consumer pricing adjustments in certain markets and categories to mitigate the tariff impact.
The significant guidance cut, combined with the weaker-than-expected Q2 performance and tariff concerns, likely contributed to the sharp pre-market decline in Edgewell's stock price. Investors appear to be reassessing the company's near-term growth prospects in light of these economic headwinds and operational challenges.
