Shanxi Forges a New Path of Diversified Industrial Development

Nov 28

Shanxi Province is undergoing a remarkable transformation from resource dependency to innovation-driven growth, shifting from a single-industry reliance to a diversified economic model. The coal chemical industry is advancing toward higher value-added and deeper processing, high-end equipment manufacturing is flourishing across multiple sectors, and smart agriculture is gaining momentum.

Breaking away from its historical reliance on coal, Shanxi, as a key national energy base, is reinforcing green and intelligent coal mining while ensuring stable energy supply nationwide. By November 2023, the province had established 298 intelligent coal mines and 55 green mining pilot sites, enhancing both efficiency and sustainability in coal production.

A major focus of Shanxi’s energy transition is elevating coal from a basic fuel to high-value products. As China’s first pilot province for comprehensive energy revolution reforms, Shanxi has been promoting the high-end, diversified, and low-carbon development of its coal chemical industry. For instance, Shanxi Lu’an Group converts coal byproducts into fine chemical products like nylon 6 monomers and fibers, while Shanxi Meijin Huasheng Chemical New Materials produces high-purity hydrogen and liquefied natural gas from coke oven gas, achieving an annual output of 1,570 tons of hydrogen.

To maximize coal’s value, Shanxi is upgrading its coal chemical products, transforming coal from fuel into raw materials and finished goods. This shift from a coal-dominated economy to a multi-chain collaborative model is supported by technological innovation and policy incentives. Over the past five years, Shanxi has invested approximately 5 billion yuan in provincial R&D, establishing over 80 energy technology innovation platforms and producing high-value scientific achievements.

In parallel, smart manufacturing has become a core driver of Shanxi’s industrial upgrade. The Dingxiang Flange Professional Town has built an intelligent manufacturing innovation service base, while Taiyuan Heavy Industry Rail Transit Equipment Co., Ltd. operates a smart factory capable of producing high-speed train wheels in just 52 seconds. With over 200 vibration sensors and intelligent heating systems, the company has boosted production efficiency by 20-30% and improved product qualification rates to 99.9%. By 2024, Shanxi’s digital R&D tool adoption rate reached 78.3%, with key process automation hitting 65.6%.

Agriculture in Shanxi is also embracing technology. In Shouyang County, drought-resistant farming techniques have increased corn yields to a record 1,409 kilograms per mu, setting a provincial benchmark. Supported by platforms like the Organic Dryland Agriculture Key Laboratory, Shanxi is advancing crop breeding and sustainable farming practices, ensuring food security through innovation.

Over the past five years, Shanxi has broken free from resource dependency, charting a new course with intelligent coal mining, high-end coal chemicals, smart manufacturing, and tech-driven agriculture. Looking ahead, the province aims to further leverage innovation and transformation to achieve new milestones in energy and industrial development.
