According to a recent report, in March 2026, the national 12315 platform received over 12,000 complaints related to automakers' OTA "battery locking" practices within a single month, marking a 273% year-on-year increase. This prompted official regulatory intervention, resulting in eight automakers being summoned for talks. Three were placed under investigation for violations, and two automakers withdrew the controversial software updates and pledged to restore vehicle performance. "Battery locking" refers to the practice where some automakers, without consumer consent, remotely modify parameters of the vehicle's battery management system through over-the-air (OTA) updates or in-dealer software upgrades. This can involve limiting the maximum charge level, depth of discharge, or charge/discharge power of the traction battery, leading to reduced range, slower charging, and diminished performance. Recent online rumors suggested that, although regulators have not released an official list, various sources speculate the eight automakers summoned include Byd Company Limited, Tesla Motors, XPeng Inc., Li Auto, NIO Inc., AITO, ZEEKR, and GAC Aion. Among them, Tesla Motors, XPeng Inc., and GAC Aion are reportedly under investigation due to severe violations. However, all eight automakers named in the online rumors have collectively denied being summoned. Byd Company Limited's official rumor-debunking social media account stated that rumors of the company being summoned or investigated are completely false and constitute defamation. The company has collected evidence and will pursue legal action against the rumor-mongers. Tesla Motors stated that the information is inaccurate, assuring that all its software updates undergo rigorous testing and are properly filed, and users can use them with confidence. XPeng Inc.'s legal department official account stated that certain social media accounts have maliciously hyped information about "eight automakers being summoned" and "three facing investigation for suspected violations," including XPeng Inc. in the list. Upon verification, the company has not recently received any such summons and is not under investigation. GAC Aion's legal department official account claimed that online rumors about the company being summoned or included in an investigation list due to OTA "battery locking" issues are entirely fabricated. The company has never been summoned by regulatory authorities regarding such matters and is not under investigation. ZEEKR's legal department official account stated that the company has not received any "summons" as mentioned in the false information. Regarding malicious attacks and defamatory rumors, evidence has been collected and preserved, and the company will protect its rights in accordance with the law. Additionally, Li Auto, NIO Inc., and AITO have also denied being summoned.
