Two individuals have been arrested and one remains at large in connection with an alleged smuggling operation involving Nvidia chips, leading to a sharp 33.32% decline in shares of Super Micro Computer overnight. Separately, Sharetronic Data Technology Co., Ltd. saw its stock drop 14.89% yesterday despite issuing an urgent clarification.

Yesterday afternoon, Sharetronic Data Technology Co., Ltd. released an emergency statement affirming the company's commitment to compliant operations, noting that all its intelligent computing products are procured through legitimate commercial channels and that it strictly adheres to market rules and legal regulations. Despite this clarification, the company's stock still fell 14.89%.

On Thursday evening, Super Micro Computer Inc. experienced a steep 33.32% drop after U.S. prosecutors charged three individuals, including a co-founder of Super Micro, with smuggling servers containing Nvidia chips. According to the indictment, the three—including Super Micro Computer Inc. co-founder Liao Yixian—are accused of violating chip export controls, illegally smuggling servers worth billions of dollars, and deceiving U.S. inspectors.

An unsealed U.S. indictment revealed that employees of a U.S. server manufacturer assisted in smuggling devices equipped with high-end Nvidia chips and used counterfeit equipment to mislead a U.S. inspector. The servers were assembled in the United States, shipped to Super Micro’s facility in Taiwan, and then delivered to customers. The indictment further alleges that the group used hair dryers to remove and reattach labels, making fake servers—non-functional replicas of Super Micro equipment—appear genuine. A surveillance photo included in the court documents shows a woman holding a hair dryer.

According to the indictment, a Southeast Asian company purchased approximately $2.5 billion worth of servers between 2024 and 2025, a significant portion of which was diverted. The U.S. Department of Justice stated that 71-year-old Liao Yixian of Fremont, California, and 44-year-old Ting-Wei “Willy” Sun, a contractor and Taiwanese citizen, were arrested on Thursday and are scheduled to appear in the Northern District of California. A third individual, 53-year-old Ruei-Tsang “Steven” Chang, also a Taiwanese citizen, remains at large.
