During the fourth quarter of 2025, the Hainan Provincial Market Supervision Administration conducted a quality supervision and sampling inspection of bio-organic fertilizer products within the province's distribution channels. A total of 18 product batches were sampled and tested. The inspection revealed that one batch failed to meet the required standards.
The inspection was carried out in accordance with standards such as NY 884-2012, evaluating the following parameters: appearance, organic matter content, moisture content, pH level, effective live bacteria count (cfu), fecal coliform count, ascaris egg mortality rate, and levels of total arsenic (As), total cadmium (Cd), total lead (Pb), total chromium (Cr), and total mercury (Hg). The inspection did not identify any failures related to safety indicators. However, one batch was non-compliant regarding usability requirements. The specific failing parameter was organic matter content (on a dry basis).
Insufficient organic matter content significantly diminishes the fertilizer's ability to improve soil quality. When applied, it fails to effectively replenish soil humus, hindering the improvement of soil aggregate structure. For compacted and impoverished soils, such fertilizer cannot enhance water and nutrient retention capacity nor improve soil aeration, leading to a continued deterioration of soil physicochemical properties that is detrimental to the survival and reproduction of soil microorganisms. Furthermore, substandard bio-organic fertilizers reduce the cost-effectiveness for farmers. Applying them at the same rate as qualified fertilizers will not achieve the expected soil enrichment effect, thereby indirectly increasing agricultural production costs.
The non-compliant product identified in this inspection will be handed over to the local market supervision authorities of the inspected entity and the claimed manufacturer for processing according to law.
