Will POP MART Repeat the "79 Yuan" Mistake Like Florasis? Commentary: Liking POP MART Doesn't Mean Being a Fool

On the evening of November 6, a 12-second clip from POP MART's livestream went viral online. The video showed that at 23:35, after the livestream on POP MART's blind box mini-program had ended, the feed was not cut in time. A female staff member was seen holding a brand keychain and remarking, "Wow, selling this for 79 yuan is really a bit too much." A male colleague responded, "It's fine, someone will buy it anyway."

What is this 79-yuan product? According to product details, the keychain blind box is made primarily of zinc alloy, resin, and polyester fiber, priced at 79 yuan per piece or 474 yuan for a full box. Rather than calling this livestream a "mishap," it exposed the arrogance of the trendy toy industry. The 79-yuan product has been questioned for its inflated price, which seems disproportionate to its cost—even the brand's own staff couldn't help but criticize it as "too expensive." The colleague's remark, "someone will buy it anyway," further mocked consumers as easy targets.

Consumers pay for the emotional value of trendy toy brands, not because they are willing to be "fools," but because they believe in the emotional appeal of the IP. However, with ordinary materials, frequent quality control issues, persistently high pricing, and a dismissive attitude like "someone will buy it," the brand's image has been shattered. Emotional value should never be an excuse to exploit fans. Without respect for consumers, even the hottest IP cannot justify inflated prices.
