Historic First! Apple Plans "Three Consecutive Years of Major Redesigns," Rolling Out Foldable Phones, Curved Screens and Other New Models

Apple is reportedly planning an unprecedented overhaul of its flagship iPhone product line over the next three years.

According to Bloomberg's Sunday report, the tech giant plans to introduce consecutive major design revisions over the next three years, launching various new form factors including slimmer, foldable, and curved-screen models - a first in iPhone history.

This series of major changes will begin in September this year. Apple will then release a new ultra-thin model called "iPhone Air," which will replace the existing Plus model. Next year, Apple will launch its first foldable iPhone codenamed V68, featuring a book-style design similar to Samsung Galaxy Fold that can unfold into a small tablet. In 2027, Apple will release a model featuring an all-new curved glass design, completely abandoning the flat-edge frame style.

**iPhone Air Takes the Lead This Year**

In September this year, Apple will introduce the iPhone 17 series, with the most notable being the all-new iPhone Air, which will replace the iPhone 16 Plus as a new member of the product lineup.

This product follows Apple's strategy when it first launched the MacBook Air in 2008 - thinner, lighter, and more market-appealing.

However, the ultra-thin design comes with compromises. The iPhone Air's battery life will be inferior to standard versions, featuring only one rear camera and eliminating the physical SIM card slot. This model will also be the first to use Apple's self-developed modem chip rather than the more powerful Qualcomm version.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max series launching in 2025 will not feature revolutionary changes in appearance. The Pro models will update the camera system and rear industrial design, offering new orange color options, but overall changes will be relatively modest.

**First Foldable iPhone Arrives in 2026**

The real game-changer will arrive in 2026 - Apple's first foldable iPhone. This device, codenamed V68, adopts a design similar to Samsung's book-style foldable phones and can unfold into a small tablet.

The report indicates this will be a crucial step for Apple entering the emerging foldable device market.

According to currently disclosed details, this foldable phone will feature four cameras (one front, one inner screen, two rear) and will eliminate the SIM card slot like the iPhone Air.

For biometric technology, this device will return to Touch ID fingerprint recognition rather than Face ID facial recognition.

Apple suppliers have reportedly begun preparation work for this new model, planning to start mass production early next year to meet the fall release schedule. Currently, Apple is testing black and white color schemes with suppliers.

The device will also feature the C2 modem, Apple's first self-developed cellular chip with performance approaching Qualcomm's latest products. Apple recently adjusted the foldable iPhone's screen technology from originally planned touch sensors to embedded touch screens closer to existing iPhones, to reduce creasing and improve touch accuracy.

**2027 Will Feature Curved Glass Design**

In 2027, marking the 20th anniversary of the iPhone's debut, Apple will launch the "iPhone 20" featuring curved glass design. This design will completely abandon the flat-edge frame style used since 2020, transitioning to curved glass edges on all sides.

This design breakthrough is expected to complement Apple's planned new "Liquid Glass" interactive interface, bringing users a completely refreshed visual and tactile experience while setting a new design tone for iPhone's next decade.

**Breaking Design Stagnation, Reviving Flagship Product "Excitement"**

Apple's three-year transformation plan is fundamentally driven by addressing iPhone design innovation "fatigue."

In recent years, iPhone updates have primarily focused on internal components like chips and cameras, while the "surprise factor" in appearance design has significantly diminished. Consumers purchase new phones more out of necessity rather than being attracted by new designs.

Some argue that iPhone's appearance has lost the "wow factor" that once made people willing to queue for purchases. Through consecutive launches of distinctly different new designs, Apple intends to break this stalemate, reignite consumer enthusiasm, and prove to markets and investors that iPhone remains the core of this world's highest market-cap company's innovation engine.
