The Student Executive Body of Universitas Indonesia (BEM UI) is urging consolidation among students to address issues regarding the House of Representatives (DPR). The UI Student Executive Body regards the legislative institution as having betrayed the people by neglecting the interests of the population affected by economic pressure.
"The DPR or regional representatives along with the political elite have moved further away from the people's mandate with their continuously growing salaries and benefits, while the people struggle with the crisis," a post from the @bemui_official Instagram account quoted on Monday, August 25, 2025.
The DPR has come under scrutiny due to the substantial amount of their job allowances. The politicians receive Rp 50 million per month for housing allowances. When combined with their basic salary and other benefits, the income of DPR members is estimated to exceed Rp 100 million per month.
The UI Student Executive Body is protesting this, as they believe that the DPR is not showing solidarity with the people's struggle. "An institution that should represent the people has become a symbol of betrayal," said the UI Student Executive Body.
The UI Student Executive Body is urging students to unite through a national consolidation held directly on the UI campus in Depok, West Java, today at 5 p.m. WIB (Western Indonesian Time). In the invitation poster dominated by brownish-yellow, it reads 'National Consolidation Call: Unite the Movement, Judge the Betrayers of the People!'
The UI Student Executive Body states that students, as well as the people of Indonesia, are responsible for uniting and asserting their stance against injustice. They also encourage resisting efforts to divide elements of the nation.
In addition to being held offline, this consolidation can also be joined through a Zoom Meeting. Tempo has attempted to send a message to the contact person and the Chair of the UI Student Executive Body, Zayyid Sulthan, regarding the details of this action, but neither has responded.
On the other hand, there are calls for a demonstration at the DPR on August 25, 2025, on various social media platforms. However, the SI Kerakyatan Student Executive Body and labor associations have stated that they will not participate as it is unclear who is leading the call for today's demonstration.
