Why Investors Shouldn't Be Surprised By Invivyd, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:IVVD) 31% Share Price Plunge

Simply Wall St.
Aug 22

Invivyd, Inc. (NASDAQ:IVVD) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 31% share price drop in the last month. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 40% share price drop.

After such a large drop in price, Invivyd's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.4x might make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Biotechs industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 8.8x and even P/S above 62x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

What Does Invivyd's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Invivyd has been doing relatively well. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to dive, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If the company manages to stay the course, then investors should be rewarded with a share price that matches its revenue figures.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Invivyd?

Invivyd's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, we see the company's revenues grew exponentially. Although, its longer-term performance hasn't been anywhere near as strong with three-year revenue growth being relatively non-existent overall. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the dual analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 96% each year over the next three years. With the industry predicted to deliver 113% growth each year, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.

In light of this, it's understandable that Invivyd's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

What Does Invivyd's P/S Mean For Investors?

Having almost fallen off a cliff, Invivyd's share price has pulled its P/S way down as well. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

As we suspected, our examination of Invivyd's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
