Seaplane, Glamping Construction Plan on Mount Rinjani Draws Flak

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Rinjani's Calling Alliance (Aliansi Rinjani Memanggil) rejects the development plan for seaplane and glamping facilities in the Segara Anak Lake area of Mount Rinjani National Park in West Nusa Tenggara. The alliance consists of nature-loving students and civil society organizations.

Coordinator of the Rinjani's Calling Alliance, Alfi Zakki Alfarhan, said the Rinjani National Park Office is collaborating with a company to build a seaplane and glamping facilities. The company plans to establish 15-20 glamping units in the Segara Anak Lake area.

"The seaplane will land at Segara Anak Lake three times a day," he said when contacted on Thursday, July 10, 2025.

Alfi explained that the Rinjani National Park Office designates several zones, including the core zone, wilderness zone, and utilization zone. No construction is allowed in the core zone, and the Segara Anak Lake area, according to Alfi, falls within the core zone.

However, Alfi suspects that the National Park Office has changed the status of some areas around Segara Anak Lake to utilization zones, making room for commercialization.

Alfi maintained that Segara Anak Lake is an ecological zone, where the indigenous people of Lombok also consider the area as sacred. They perform religious ceremonies at the location three times a year. "So, the area shouldn't be tampered with," he said.

Alfi mentioned that the Rinjani National Park Office should not be concerned with developments in the Mount Rinjani area. Instead, they should focus on improving hiking management, such as strengthening safety and evacuation standard operating procedures (SOP).

"Also, focus on improving the trails and controlling the amount of waste," he said. Alfi also urged the Rinjani National Park Office to enhance the understanding of guides and porters. They need to be equipped with skills for first aid and basic evacuation procedures.

Yesterday, hundreds of people staged a protest against the plan to build a seaplane and glamping facilities in Mount Rinjani. The protest took place at the Rinjani National Park Office in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

Based on an official release, the Rinjani National Park Office acknowledged granting permission to PT. Innovative Tourism Solutions (ITS) to carry out the construction of the seaplane and glamping facilities at Segara Anak Lake. The office claimed the permit application was processed lawfully, in an official statement on Thursday, July 10, 2025.

According to the Rinjani National Park Office, permits will not be issued if the environmental sustainability standards are not up to par.
