The US Prosecution Accuses Cryptocurrency Entrepreneur of Laundering Over $500 Million and Assisting Russia in Acquiring Sensitive Technology

According to the Financial Times, U.S. prosecutors have charged the founder of cryptocurrency payment company Evita, Iurii Gugnin, with sanctions evasion and violating export controls, accusing him of laundering over $500 million and assisting Russia in obtaining sensitive technology.

Court documents released by the Brooklyn Federal Court show that Gugnin has been charged with telecommunication and bank fraud, money laundering, and other crimes. The Department of Justice stated that he was arrested and arraigned in New York. Prosecutors allege that Gugnin used his company to facilitate overseas clients' payments for sensitive electronic products, including U.S.-designed servers subject to export controls, and laundered money to procure parts for the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom).
