TikTok, Meta, Snapchat demand answers on YouTube ‘sweetheart deal’

TikTok has led fellow social media giants Meta and Snapchat in demanding an explanation from Communications Minister Michelle Rowland over her favourable treatment for Google-owned YouTube, which is being exempted from world-leading social media age restriction laws.

TikTok said the “sweetheart deal” undermined the integrity of the plans, but Rowland again refused to explain why YouTube’s content was any less harmful to under-16s than that on other banned platforms.
