Uncertainty may be the most oft-used word on Wall Street this year, and there is no reason to expect that to change as markets continue to digest how the tariff war will play out.

This is a shortened trading week, with both equity and fixed-income markets closed in observance of Good Friday. Before then, more than 30 S&P 500 companies, dominated by financial services firms, will report quarterly results.

Goldman Sachs Group kicks off the earnings party on Monday, followed by Bank of America, Citigroup, and Johnson & Johnson on Tuesday. On Wednesday we will get results from Abbott Laboratories, ASML Holding, and U.S. Bancorp., American Express, Blackstone, Charles Schwab, Netflix, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing close out the week on Thursday.

The retail sales report from the Census Bureau, released on Wednesday, will probably be the most important piece of economic data this week, even if all economic releases have taken a back seat to tariff-related headlines.

Across the pond, the European Central Bank announces its monetary-policy decision on Thursday, the first major central bank to do so since "Liberation Day."

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York releases its Survey of Consumer Expectations for March. Consumers' one-year inflation expectations were 3.1% in February, much lower than the 6.7% from the recently released University of Michigan survey. Fed Chair Jerome Powell called previous Michigan survey data an "outlier" at the mid-March FOMC press conference but noted that it was something the committee had to pay attention to nonetheless.

The National Association of Home Builders releases its Housing Market Index for April. Economists forecast a 37 reading, two points lower than in March. Readings less than 50 indicate that home builders have a dour outlook on the housing market.
