Potential Hallador Energy Company (NASDAQ:HNRG) shareholders may wish to note that the Independent Director, Charles Wesley, recently bought US$104k worth of stock, paying US$10.40 for each share. However, it only increased shareholding by a small percentage, and it wasn't a huge purchase by absolute value, either.

Hallador Energy Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Notably, that recent purchase by Independent Director Charles Wesley was not the only time they bought Hallador Energy shares this year. They previously made an even bigger purchase of US$149k worth of shares at a price of US$5.97 per share. We do like to see buying, but this purchase was made at well below the current price of US$13.36. Because the shares were purchased at a lower price, this particular buy doesn't tell us much about how insiders feel about the current share price.

While Hallador Energy insiders bought shares during the last year, they didn't sell. Their average price was about US$6.57. We don't deny that it is nice to see insiders buying stock in the company. However, we do note that they were buying at significantly lower prices than today's share price. Does Hallador Energy Boast High Insider Ownership?

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Insiders own 13% of Hallador Energy shares, worth about US$67m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

So What Do The Hallador Energy Insider Transactions Indicate?

It is good to see the recent insider purchase. We also take confidence from the longer term picture of insider transactions. But we don't feel the same about the fact the company is making losses. Given that insiders also own a fair bit of Hallador Energy we think they are probably pretty confident of a bright future. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
