April 9 - President Donald Trump has warned Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (NYSE:TSM) it could face a 100% tax if it doesn't build its factories in the U.S. Speaking at a Republican National Congressional Committee event, Trump slammed the Biden administration's $6.6 billion subsidy for TSMC's Phoenix, Arizona operations, saying semiconductor companies shouldn't need such support.
"I gave them no money all I did was say, if you don't build your plant here, you're going to pay a big tax," Trump said. His comments underscore the ongoing push for more U.S. semiconductor production.
TSMC has not responded to Trump's remarks. The company had previously revealed plans to invest $100 billion in the U.S., including the construction of five additional chip facilities.
At the same time, Taiwan is hoping for a swift resolution to the 32% tariffs imposed by the U.S. In response, Taiwan has offered a zero-tariff deal and promised to boost U.S. investments and purchases.
