Hennessy Advisors' (NASDAQ:HNNA) investors will be pleased with their respectable 64% return over the last year

Hennessy Advisors, Inc. (NASDAQ:HNNA) shareholders have seen the share price descend 13% over the month. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last year have been pleasing. In that time we've seen the stock easily surpass the market return, with a gain of 55%.

So let's assess the underlying fundamentals over the last 1 year and see if they've moved in lock-step with shareholder returns.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the last year Hennessy Advisors grew its earnings per share (EPS) by 78%. This EPS growth is significantly higher than the 55% increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market isn't as excited about Hennessy Advisors as it was before. This could be an opportunity. This cautious sentiment is reflected in its (fairly low) P/E ratio of 9.41.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Hennessy Advisors, it has a TSR of 64% for the last 1 year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Hennessy Advisors shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 64% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 14% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Hennessy Advisors better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - Hennessy Advisors has 3 warning signs (and 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) we think you should know about.
