The past five years for Zymeworks (NASDAQ:ZYME) investors has not been profitable

While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the Zymeworks Inc. (NASDAQ:ZYME) share price up 14% in a single quarter. But that is little comfort to those holding over the last half decade, sitting on a big loss. The share price has failed to impress anyone , down a sizable 69% during that time. So we're not so sure if the recent bounce should be celebrated. Of course, this could be the start of a turnaround.

It's worthwhile assessing if the company's economics have been moving in lockstep with these underwhelming shareholder returns, or if there is some disparity between the two. So let's do just that.

View our latest analysis for Zymeworks

Because Zymeworks made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

Over five years, Zymeworks grew its revenue at 38% per year. That's better than most loss-making companies. Unfortunately for shareholders the share price has dropped 11% per year - disappointing considering the growth. It's safe to say investor expectations are more grounded now. If you think the company can keep up its revenue growth, you'd have to consider the possibility that there's an opportunity here.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Zymeworks has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 44% in the last twelve months. That certainly beats the loss of about 11% per year over the last half decade. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Zymeworks better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for Zymeworks you should know about.
