On Friday, Apple (AAPL, Financial) temporarily paused the use of artificial intelligence-generated news summaries in its news applications because of accuracy concerns. The decision comes after reports of huge errors in the output of the AI system, in particular those identified by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
According to the BBC's report, Apple's AI summaries distorted certain notifications in November and spread misinformation. Another incident stood out: one that falsely identified UnitedHealthcare executive Luigi Mangione as both a shooter and a person shot in a fictional incident. These errors were worrying about the reliability of AI-generated news, especially while it was disseminated.
AI-generated summaries are suspended for users on Apple's beta software but exclude users who rely on the company's main operating systems. That strategic limitation limits disruption to Apple's broader user base and repairs the reported issues.
The move is Apple's carefully considered use of AI: specifically, it's using the technology conservatively in its work among high-stakes applications such as news reporting. However, this development also shows challenges in delivering the real-time content that artificial intelligence is implemented for, as AI remains a big part of Apple's technology strategy.
