Ray Dalio has published best-selling books detailing his views on life, work and geopolitics. Now the founder and former chief investment officer of hedge fund Bridgewater Associates is making his “Principles” investing series available to financial professionals in an online course.
The Wealth Management Institute of Singapore in September launched the Dalio Market Principles Program in Strategic Investing for Family Offices program, an accredited subscription-based certificate program that teaches some of the strategies and tactics used by Dalio to build Bridgewater and his own family office over the past 50 years.
“I’m at a stage in my life where my goal is to pass along whatever I have that is of value… philanthropically, and, to some extent, knowledge,” Dalio said during a recent episode of the Investopedia Express podcast. “It was great to be able to partner with the WMI to deliver this course—it gives me great satisfaction.”
Dalio, who retired from Bridgewater last year, has a longstanding relationship with the WMI and Singapore. He and Bridgewater have been managing money for Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund for over 30 years, and Dalio’s own family office has been headquartered in Singapore for about that long.
The program, along with Dalio’s Market and Economic Principles Online programs and various certification programs for wealth management and finance professionals, is available through the WMI’s online learning center.
The course is focused on ”the timeless and universal principles driving markets and economies, investment skill development, and strategies tailored for the unique circumstances faced by family offices,” Dalio said when announcing the course earlier this year.
In the wide-ranging podcast interview, Dalio discussed subjects including cryptocurrency, which he said makes up a “small percentage” of his portfolio.
"You have to think about what is the alternative money”, said Dalio. “Gold is still the third-largest reserve currency—the U.S. dollar, the euro, gold and then Japanese yen,” he said. “So I prefer gold.”
Dalio’s program is available for sale to all residents of Singapore; other locations are under consideration. It covers topics including investing and trading strategies, economic and market principles, and debt and deleveraging cycles.
It also includes excerpts, examples and videos from Dalio’s books and other media. “Principles,” originally published in 2017, became a best-seller. It was followed by“Principles for Dealing with a Changing World Order,” published in 2021.
