Strong week for Nine Energy Service (NYSE:NINE) shareholders doesn't alleviate pain of five-year loss

This month, we saw the Nine Energy Service, Inc. (NYSE:NINE) up an impressive 65%. But spare a thought for the long term holders, who have held the stock as it bled value over the last five years. In fact, the share price has tumbled down a mountain to land 70% lower after that period. It's true that the recent bounce could signal the company is turning over a new leaf, but we are not so sure. The important question is if the business itself justifies a higher share price in the long term.

On a more encouraging note the company has added US$7.6m to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the five-year loss for shareholders.

Nine Energy Service isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

In the last five years Nine Energy Service saw its revenue shrink by 0.6% per year. That's not what investors generally want to see. If a business loses money, you want it to grow, so no surprises that the share price has dropped 11% each year in that time. It takes a certain kind of mental fortitude (or recklessness) to buy shares in a company that loses money and doesn't grow revenue. That is not really what the successful investors we know aim for.

NYSE:NINE Earnings and Revenue Growth December 3rd 2024

It's good to see that there was some significant insider buying in the last three months. That's a positive. That said, we think earnings and revenue growth trends are even more important factors to consider. So we recommend checking out this free report showing consensus forecasts

A Different Perspective

Investors in Nine Energy Service had a tough year, with a total loss of 24%, against a market gain of about 34%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 11% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Nine Energy Service better, we need to consider many other factors. For instance, we've identified 5 warning signs for Nine Energy Service (1 is a bit unpleasant) that you should be aware of.
