British American Tobacco (NYSE:BTI) continued gains for seven straight sessions as the stock closed 0.39% higher, at $37.08 on Wednesday.

The London-based cigarette company gained 4.8% in the last six trading sessions. The stock has gained more than 26% so far this year, compared to an over 24% rise in the broader S&P 500 Index.

BTI is up 6% over the past one month. The stock closed 0.68% higher, at $36.93 on Tuesday.

The election results have led to gains in the tobacco sector as analysts, like UBS, see the Republican win as a slight positive for tobacco stocks. Analyst Faham Baig reminded investors that Republican control has historically been seen as a positive for U.S. tobacco, due to the likelihood of reduced regulation.

In addition, the Trump campaign has proposed lowering the U.S. corporate tax rate to 15% for companies that make their products in the U.S. However, Baig also noted that the key challenge facing the U.S. tobacco industry is the growth of grey-market flavored disposable vapes, which are predominantly from China.

Seeking Alpha’s Quant rating seems extremely optimistic regarding the BTI stock and has rated it as a STRONG BUY, with a score of 4.85 out of 5.

SA Authors are also optimistic, rating the stock a BUY, while the sell side analysts remain cautious, recommending HOLD.

Seeking Alpha analyst, Roberts Berzins argues that BTI remains a sound high-income play, adding that even though interest rates are still relatively high, it is not easy to find ~ 8.5% yielding securities that carry robust capital structures.

Berzins, however, pointed to certain key risks such as continued declines in the core or conventional product categories, which face increasingly higher taxes and lower demand levels.

“BTI, with already defensive balance sheet, steadily growing business, which becomes more and more focused on new categories and lower base rates offers, in my view, one of the best dividend plays in the common equity space,” Berzins added.
