Portage Biotech's Market Cap Drops To US$4.3m Leaving Insiders With Losses

Insiders who acquired US$1.24m worth of Portage Biotech Inc.'s (NASDAQ:PRTG) stock at an average price of US$17.65 in the past 12 months may be dismayed by the recent 11% price decline. This is not good as insiders invest based on expectations that their money will appreciate over time. However, as a result of recent losses, their original investment is now worth only US$286.3k.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Portage Biotech Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Independent Lead Director Gregory Bailey for US$1.2m worth of shares, at about US$18.43 per share. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of US$4.09. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. We always take careful note of the price insiders pay when purchasing shares. It is encouraging to see an insider paid above the current price for shares, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels. Gregory Bailey was the only individual insider to buy shares in the last twelve months.

Does Portage Biotech Boast High Insider Ownership?

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Insiders own 33% of Portage Biotech shares, worth about US$1.4m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Portage Biotech Insiders?

But on the other hand, the company made a loss during the last year, which makes us a little cautious.
