TEMPO.CO, JakartaPresident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo inaugurated the State Palace in the Nusantara Capital (IKN), East Kalimantan, today, October 11, 2024. He subsequently handed over the inauguration of the Garuda Palace, or the Presidential Office, in the new capital to President-elect Prabowo Subianto.

“Since the Garuda Palace is still in the finishing process and might require another month to complete, I will inaugurate the State Palace first today,” he announced in IKN as broadcast live from the Presidential Secretariat.

In attendance were Prabowo's staff, the Secretary-General of the Gerindra Party and Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), Ahmad Muzani. Also present, as seen in the live broadcast, were First Lady Iriana Jokowi, State Secretary Pratikno, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Pandjaitan, Minister of Agrarian and Spatial Planning Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, Minister of Public Works and Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, Minister of Investment Rosan Roeslani, and Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin.

According to the initial agenda for the day, Jokowi was scheduled to inaugurate not only the State Palace and Garuda Palace but also the Hermina Hospital and Mayapada Hospital. In addition to these inauguration events, the head of state also delivered a speech at the CEO 100 Kompas forum.

Both the State Palace and the Garuda Palace in IKN have been operational since July 2024. Jokowi held two cabinet meetings within three months in the new capital city and also celebrated Indonesia's Independence Day on August 17 for the first time in IKN's history.

The budget for the State Palace building and the Ceremonial Field amounts to Rp1.34 trillion, whereas the Garuda Palace or Presidential Office incurred a budget of Rp1.56 trillion. Combined, the total budget for both is Rp2.90 trillion.

Previously, Jokowi handed over the responsibility of signing the presidential decree (Keppres) on the relocation of the Capital City from Jakarta to IKN to his successor, Prabowo. The former Governor of Jakarta has repeatedly emphasized the importance of considering ecosystem readiness in this capital relocation.

“Yes, it should be signed by the new president, Pak Prabowo. Everything takes time. Moving houses is complicated, let alone moving the capital city,” he said in IKN as quoted from his press statement on Sunday, October 6.
